Myanmar is the largest country on mainland South-East Asia with a total land area of 676,577 sq.km and a coastline of 2,832 km. The population is 51.4 million. The country shares total international borders of 5,858 km with Bangladesh and India on the north-west, China on the north-east and Loas and Thailand on the south-east. It is dynamic crossroad linking South East Asia, Western China (Yunnan) and the India sub-continent and is an economic gateway to a potential vast market of round about two billion consumers as well as sub-regional economic nodal links. Myanmar is primarily still an agricultural country with agriculture contributing approximately 36.4% if GDP in the year 2011-2012. Most of the manufacturing activities are also agricultural based and among these, the food industry enjoys the highest share at approximately 63% of total registered industries. The government of Myanmar realizes that due to the geographic location, demand potential, availability of raw materials and human resources, the food sector is seen as one of the most promising sectors for not only domestic industrial development but also for export growth. The Myanmar Agro Based Food Processors & Exporters Association was founded on 21st August 2006 with the aim of developing the food industry of the country. The Food Industries Development Supporting Laboratory has also been established since 2009 for the evaluation and standardization of food products. The name of the association has also been changed to Myanmar Food Processors and Exporters Association since 11th May 2012, to cover all food sectors.

The Organization structure of MFPEA has to be strengthened since the food industry in Myanmar is the largest in terms of number of enterprises. 4 Departments, 7 Committees and 12 Sector Specific Groups have been formed to effectively and efficiently undertake the activities of association.
